Getting to a College or University Home Page


You can get to most schools' home pages by pointing your browser to the address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for that school. For example:

http://www.(name or initials of college).edu

If that does not work, or you are not sure of the name or initials of a particular college, the Wichita State University Library has three books (located on Index Table 14 in the Reference Area on the first floor) that provide URL's for schools that have home pages:

Perhaps the simplest way to access a school's home page is to use one of the many links provided below. Many of the links listed under Colleges and Universities--U. S. and Worldwide allow you to search by school name, or by certain criteria that you specify.

A2Z: Education: College Home Pages
Provides links to the home pages of colleges and universities in North America, Africa, Asia, Australia/Oceania/ Europe, Latin America/South America, the Middle East, and to sites for distance learning.

American Universities
A listing of links to home pages for American universities that grant bachelor or advanced degrees. If the University as a whole does not yet have a home page, some links are to department or college level pages. Schools are listed in alphabetical order by name.

Black Excel's Historically Black and Predominantly Black College Listing
A list of 143 schools that are historically black colleges or have higher than 75% black enrollment. The list includes address and phone number for each school, as well as average SAT scores, majors, percentage of acceptances, and name and phone number of alumni association contact persons, when available. The list's ten best schools are noted. Does not appear to have been updated since December 1995.

College and University Home Pages
Provides links to several thousand college and university home pages in 70 countries. Schools can be accessed from either an alphabetical or geographical listing.

College Compass--Colleges and Universities
A list of U.S., international and historically black colleges and universities (there are also categories for Southern States and Mississippi). For U.S. schools, clickable maps guide you to the geographic region or state you are interested in. This listing includes the address, phone number, size of enrollment and tuition costs for all schools in each state, and, if a school's home page is available on the Internet, a link is provided.

CollegeEdge
In addition to providing practical information about preparing for college, choosing a major, applying to college, etc., this site allows you to search their list of 3,800 schools to see which ones match your interests and qualifications. You can also search for a school by name or state, and then link directly to that school's home page.

CollegeNET
Provides a "College Search" section which allows you to search for schools in the following categories: 1) Four Year US Colleges, 2) Four Year Schools by State Map, 3) Community, Technical and Junior Colleges, 4) Schools in Canada, 5) Schools in New Zealand, 6) Law Schools, 7) MBA Programs, 8) Medical Schools, and 9) Schools of Osteopathic Medicine. When you click on Four Year US Colleges, you can search for schools by state or region, adding such criteria as enrollment size and tuition costs preferred, availability of intercollegiate sports, majors offered, etc. An overview of each school is provided, with links to more detailed information on the school's home page. In some cases, you can also request more information from a school simply by clicking on a link to the school's Admissions Office. Many of the schools listed will let you apply while you are online using the database's ApplyWeb software.

Collegescape
Browse an alphabetical list of a limited number of colleges, or do a search of those colleges based on location, tuition and/or number of students. You can apply online to 200 college programs, and 50 of the colleges allow you to apply electronically and at no charge.

College Search
Search for information about U. S. colleges by name or by selecting specific criteria and allowing the site to match colleges to your needs. Criteria include degree desired (Bachelor's, etc.), geographic area, major field of study, public or private school, enrollment size, financial aid availability, and others. Detailed information about each school is provided, such as tuition cost, admission requirements, accreditation data, majors offered, information for foreign students, etc. Site is sponsored by the College Board.

CollegeView College Search
Presents profiles of over 3,500 U. S. colleges and universities, virtual tours and multimedia presentations from some schools, electronic applications (AppZap), financial aid information, career planning tools, and more. The College Search function allows you to look for information by typing in the name of a specific college, or by choosing certain criteria that meet your needs, such as Fields of study, Location, Study body size and ethnic mix, religious affiliation, and more.

CollegeXpress
Offers profiles of over 250 private American colleges and universities. You may search for colleges alphabetically by name, by region, or by preferences you select such as career interests, location, number of students, average annual tuition, etc.

.edu: U. S. News Colleges and Careers Center
Provides admission, academic and financial aid information on the 1,400 schools listed in U. S. News' college rankings. Click on get into college, and then on find your college. This takes you to the Find Your College Search screen where you can search for schools by name, region/state, campus setting, school size, selectivity, majors offered and cost.

FishNet--The College Guide
Search this relatively small (less than 150) list of U. S. schools by name or by region. Or, click on College Search to pull up a search form that allows you to enter preferences such as Region, Estimated Annual Cost, Freshman Class Size, Surrounding Community Size, Public or Private School, or search on a keyword that you specify. You may also download a Windows or Macintosh version of the Common Application Form.

Global Computing, Inc.--American Universities
A simple alphabetical listing of links to college and university home pages.

Internet College Exchange (ICX)
This site is a directory of addresses and phone numbers for over 5,000 colleges and universities in the U.S and its territories. Search for schools by name, or by criteria such as Type of College, Region or State, Size of College, Cost of Tuition, etc. Schools with a mailbox icon next to their names will allow you to send an e-mail message directly to their Admissions offices.

Job Source--College and Universities Directory
A directory of links to a large number of college and university home pages in the U. S. and worldwide.

Jobtrak College and University Index
A list of regionally accredited universities and community colleges in the U. S. with links to their home pages. You may view the list in alphabetical order by school name, or in order by state.

Kaplan's College Zine: The Road to College
Offers links to home pages for most of the 420 top schools featured in Kaplan's book The Road to College.

Link Magazine--The Digital Campus--U.S. Colleges
Provides links to over 1,500 U. S. college home pages. Schools are listed in alphabetical order by name.

MOLIS--Minority Online Information Service
Provides links to the home pages of this service's 164 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) lists.

Money Online: College Search
Money magazine's database of 1,105 American schools. Search alphabetically by name of school, or by any combination of 41 factors such as location, cost, financial aid, size, student-faculty ratio, etc. The profile of each school provides information on factors such as cost, admissions difficulty, and the average H.S. GPA of incoming freshmen, and then compares the school to the national average for each factor. A link is provided to each school's home page, if one is available.

Peterson's Education and Career Center
Click on Colleges & Universities to search for colleges in the U.S. and Canada by name, location, type of degree (2-year or 4-year), type of college (2- or 4-year), religious affiliation, professional degree programs, or by keywords that you specify. A list of 650 schools that accept the "Universal Application" is also available. You can download a Windows or Macintosh version of the Universal Application form at no charge.

Princeton Review--So You Want to Go to College
Click on Finding It and then use the Find-O-Rama search engine to search Princeton Review's list of schools by name, or by criteria such as location, financial aid, sports offered, student life, housing, etc. Provides a sketch of each school, with basic information such as student demographics, most popular majors, statistics on financial aid, tuition & expenses, etc. Also provides a link to the school's home page if one is available. Offers lists of the top 10 colleges in a variety of categories such as academics, politics, social life, and others.

Universities.com
A searchable database of over 4,000 college and university home pages worldwide. Search by name or geographic location.

University Pages
A state-by-state list of links to American college and university home pages.

.edu: U. S. News Colleges & Careers Center--Beyond College
Click on Find Your Grad School to access information on over 800 U. S. business, engineering, law and medical schools. Search for schools by name, state or field of study. Click on The Rankings to see the U.S. News graduate school rankings taken from their publication, America's Best Graduate Schools.

Gradschools.com
A directory of graduate programs in the U.S. and worldwide. Search by choosing a field of study from pre-selected categories, or by typing in a keyword(s). Programs are arranged geographically within each category (East of the Mississippi River or West of the Mississippi River), and programs outside the U.S. as well as distance learning options are also listed.

Jobtrak Guide to Graduate School
Provides links to general information on applying to graduate school, as well as to information on law, business and medical schools. Also offers links to financial aid information for graduate students.

Peterson's Education & Career Center--Graduate Study
Provides information on graduate and professional programs offered by more than 1,600 accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. and its territories, and by institutions in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Africa that are accredited by U.S. accrediting bodies. Search by school name or location, by discipline, or by keyword.

Princeton Review--So You Want to Go to Grad School
Click on Go to Grad School for information on the GRE and other admission tests. Click on Be a Lawyer, Be a Doctor, or Go to B-School to access Princeton Review's Find-o-Rama software to search for U.S. graduate schools by name or by criteria that you select, such as Student Life, Tuition, Admissions Rating, etc.

Rankings and Ratings of Schools

America's 100 Most Wired Colleges
Presents the results of a survey sent to the academic computing departments, information technology offices, public affairs offices and students of 300 U.S. colleges and universities. The survey addressed four main categories: student services, hardware and wiring, academic use of the Internet, and recreational use of the Internet. View the list of colleges who made the top 100 by name or in rank order.

.edu: U.S. News Colleges and Careers Center--The Rankings
Select Get Into College to access the rankings of 1,400 colleges as compiled by U.S. News. Select Beyond College to access U.S. News' rankings of graduate schools.

Electronic Aids for Applying to Colleges

CollegeEdge Web Apps
Allows you to apply to electronically to a small number of schools, and to fill out and print copies of the Common Application form from your computer. Provides a list of schools that accept the Common Application.

Common Application Form
The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) develops and distributes the Common Application. This Internet version of the Application is exactly the same as the paper version, and you can download it to your own computer.

XAP Corporation's Colleges & Universities A-Z
Search XAP Corporation's database of U.S. colleges offering applications that can be downloaded or sent over the Internet. Search for schools by name or geographic region.
